Sweetheart Of The Month
– Sam De La O –
1) Please introduce yourself! We’d love to get to know you.
Hi! I’m Sam, and it’s wonderful to meet you. I am twenty years old, from Southern California, and currently an English major at Vanguard University. I enjoy reading and creative writing, drawing and photography. My drink of choice is coffee, and I spend way too much time in coffee shops and bookstores. I am very fond of the 1920’s, and F. Scott Fitzgerald is my favorite author of all time. As of right now, the place I long to visit most in the world is Paris, France, though there are a lot of close seconds.
2) We notice you are also a creative. What is one of your favorite creative projects and why?
Painting has been one of my favorites lately. I think I enjoy it more than most things, because I don’t feel the need or pressure to make it perfect, like I often do with my writing and other creative projects. When I paint I can truly let my creativity flow, and that feeling is very valuable to me.
3) What is your favorite piece of literature and why?
Oh wow. This is definitely a tough question to answer, just because there are so many! My favorite right now, (I think) is The Paris Wife, by Paula McLain, which details the lives of Ernest and Hadley Hemingway, from Hadley’s perspective. I love it because of the vivid descriptions of Paris in the twenties, and the deep connection it gives you to the historical figures, and the beauty, and tragedy, of their lives.
4) The Sweetheart persona is all about kindness. Who has had the biggest influence in your life when it comes to being taught how to be “kind?”
Definitely my mom. She taught me from the time I was little to be kind to everyone, and to seek out those around me who were alone and needed love. In elementary school, she helped me write a poem about bullying, confronting a lot of the problems that I’d seen from the other kids at my school. I honestly believe that if everyone had a mom like mine, there would be a lot less bullying everywhere.
5) The Sweetheart persona is all about being in good company. What is your favorite memory with your friends?
I actually don’t have a specific memory at the moment, mostly because every moment I spend with them is special to me, even if it’s just going out really quick to grab coffee, or meeting up in the library at school. That’s probably sappy, I know.
6) What makes your heart beat? What do you believe in, stand for, and want to tell others about?
I believe in love and kindness, and seeking to help others when no one else will. Specifically, I believe in spreading the love and compassion of Jesus Christ, who set the perfect example of how we should love.
7) What do you do? And what led you to choose this path?
At the moment I am a full time student, visual merchandiser, and a social media manager and photographer for a small an online magazine. I do what I do because it allows me to be creative when I work, while still accomplishing tasks that are important in everyday life. Someday I hope to an editor for a fashion or beauty magazine.
8) If you could describe your ideal day, how would it go?
There would definitely be coffee, first of all. The weather would be sunny with just a little chill, only enough so that you can wear a dress and not get too cold. My friends and the people I love would be around me, and there would be plenty of things to take pictures of. If those things are in place, I’m up for anything.
