With the start of the new year, it seems like everyone wants to live a “healthier” lifestyle. But more times than not, we quit these new routines before the spring season has even begun. Why do so many people take on the challenge of cleaning up their eating, make commitments to working out, & overall improve their physical & mental health only to quit 3 months in?
To be honest, I do not know the answer to this question. But one thing I do know is that we can all make simple and enjoyable changes in our everyday routine to work towards a better & more health-centered life. Here are just a few of my suggestions on how we can all make steps to leading a healthier life!
Try out a new workout class!
When you dedicate the new year to working on your body it can be easy to fall into a boring routine, or even to just give up altogether because let’s face it: the gym can be a scary place. My suggestion would be to try something out of your comfort zone. For me, this was going to hot yoga. I had no idea what to expect but I went and had a blast! It was something different and it sparked my excitement for working out in a new way. I also met some incredible people and got plugged into a brand new community. With this new level of excitement for working out, I found myself more dedicated to continuing my practice/eating healthier. I found that my best friend in the morning to prep for a yoga class was peanut butter banana overnight oats!
Find little ways to relieve your stress!
This point is key for me. I have dealt with a lot of stress already in 2017. As many of you know, severe stress/anxiety is no joke. When you are at your most stressed or anxious you can tend to feel like nothing is going right. This is when I discovered essential oils. And oh boy, I AM OBSESSED. Whenever I am feeling a bit of stress wash over me, the first thing I do is pop some of my essential oils into my diffuser, take a few deep breaths and immediately I begin to feel myself calming down. Now of course, relieving stress is going to be different for everyone, but I recommend you experiment with a few new techniques until you find the right fit for you. Some of my friends enjoy journaling through their stress, reading scripture, having some tea, or even taking a short nap to rid themselves of stress. Having a routine to rid stress and anxiety will make you feel more prepared and will allow you space to clear your head.
One of the best ways to stay rejuvenated and on your A game is to let yourself enjoy a treat every once in a while. Take that friend you haven’t seen in forever out for coffee, make a funny SnapChat video, eat a donut, whatever it is that makes you smile: do that. When you get wrapped up in the entire process of eating healthier & exercising normally you can lose sight of some of the most beautiful and precious moments in life. Do not forget that your mental health is just as valuable as your physical health. Total healthy living includes indulging in some of your favorite little things
As we approach this spring season, I encourage you to set some small goals for yourself. Break down what you desire into “bite-sized” pieces and just begin. Over time, you will see these pieces being woven together into one large dream that you accomplished.
