1) Background Story:
Owners Robert and Diane Yoon, a brother-sister team, grew up in neighboring Fullerton. It wasn’t long before Diane decided to pursue her passion in the pastry arts. After graduating from the pastry program at the French Culinary Institute in New York City, Diane brought back her expertise, and with the support of her family and friends, made her passion a reality with the opening of Merely Sweets in September 2011.
2) How are you different?
Since we are a family owned business a lot of our recipes are straight out of the Yoon family cookbooks. If they didn’t come from there, Diane created the recipe herself just for Merely Sweets.
3) What is your best seller?
We would definitely have to say our Banana Pudding and French Macarons. Our Banana Pudding is a little deceiving, since it is packaged so simply and has few ingredients, but the simplicity is what makes it great. We usually have between 12-16 flavors of macarons daily. Our most popular flavors are the Circus Animal Cookie and Salted Caramel. We definitely recommend giving them all a try, even the Vanilla Bean!
4) Do you have more than one location?
We are currently located in Brea Downtown and this is our only location. There aren’t any plans in the near future for expansion. We absolutely adore Brea and we’re so happy to call it our home.
5) What are your future goals?
We would love to expand on our specialty flavors for macarons and cupcakes! We already have a handful on rotation but we would like to add more options on our daily menu during the week.
6) Do you have seasonal items and when should we look for them?
We love seasonal sweets! With each new season we add several new desserts and bring back old favorites to the menu to highlight the season. Our most popular seasonal item is our Gingerbread Macaron, look for it during the months of November through February. During the warmer months, our favorite sweet treats are the Lemon Meringue Tart and Passionfruit Tart.
7) Do you offer custom orders?
Our Weddings & Events team has grown greatly since we first started in 2011. We offer wedding cakes, dessert tables, custom cookies and everything in between. We also offer consultations during the week where you can taste desserts and discuss the design of the sweets. Aside for designing, it’s so wonderful to connect with clients and get to know them through the process. Many of our clients have come back to us after their wedding for the baby shower and to celebrate a first birthday!
This wasn’t our first time here at Merely Sweets, we love coming for delicious and creative macaroons. This wassss the first time we really talked to the staff and saw the passion behind this whole company. We left so inspired and so proud of what they have accomplished over the years. I wasn’t super familiar with their custom work before talking to them and stood amazed at what they can do with a macaroon or sugar cookie. It really is an art form and I HIGHLY recommend you give them a theme and then creative freedom because they will go beyond your expectations. We’re excited to team up with them in the future and for our upcoming event this April. We’ll be sure to share what they create for our picnic + movie night.
