Grilled Cheese 3 Ways

Who doesn’t love a good grilled cheese sandwich? Well in honor of today being National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day I’m sharing with you three delicious ways to amp up your typical grilled cheese. Starting off with a 3 cheese grilled cheese for all you extra cheese lovers out there, then making our way to my personal favorite- the bacon and caramelized onion grilled cheese, and then finishing it off with an apple grilled cheese. All of these recipes use 1 tablespoon of butter, 2 slices of bread of your choice, and various amounts of sharp cheddar cheese, along with other ingredients based on the recipe.

Three Cheese Grilled Cheese


  • 2 slices of bread of your choice (I’ll be using sourdough for all of these recipes because it’s my fave, but feel free to use any type)
  • 2 slices of sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup of fresh shavings of parmesan cheese
  • 2 slices of mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of butter

  1. First butter one side of each slice of bread and place each slice, butter side down, on your pan over medium heat.
  2. Lay down slices of each cheese on one of the slices of bread, and then flip the other slice of your bread on top of the slice you just placed the cheese on.
  3. Grill over medium heat for 4-6 minutes per side, until the bread is crispy and the cheese is melty.

Bacon and Caramelized Onion Grilled Cheese


  • 2 slices of bread
  • 4 slices of sharp cheddar cheese (I took the ingredient photo before I realized that one more slice of cheese would work out better for this sandwich)
  • 2 strips of bacon cut into halves
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 tablespoon of butter

  1. Cook bacon and set aside. Pour out most of the fat but leave about 1 tablespoon in the pan to cook the onions in.
  2. Chop your onion half into 1/4 inch slices and place into your pan that has the bacon fat in it (make sure that your pan is warm when your putting your onions in it). Caramelize for about 20 minutes mixing every few minutes.
  3. Repeat steps 1-3 from previous recipe but add the onions and bacon in addition to your cheese.

Sharp Cheddar and Apple Grilled Cheese


  • 2 slices of bread
  • 3 slices of sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 of a granny smith apple
  • 1 tablespoon of butter

  1. Slice your granny smith apple quarter into thin slices
  2. Repeat steps 1-3 from first recipe and add the apple slices in addition to the cheddar cheese
  • This sandwich would also taste amazing if you added the caramelized onions from the previous recipe
