Adventurer of The Month:
1) Tell us a little about yourself. We want to get to know you!
I am a 24 year old Arizona native seeking out adventure in the world. I never want to look back on life and feel as if I never truly lived, so it is my goal to do and see as much as I can. When I’m not travelling, I’m watching Netflix, going on hikes, checking out local dive bars, and painting. Oh and did I mention I have the most wonderful husband in the world? Layton is the most supportive person in the world, and without him, I would have never had the courage to follow my dreams.
2) We love seeing photos of your adventures. How did it all start for you?
In college, I struggled to find the right career path. I was studying history but I had no clue what to do once I graduated. Layton, who was my boyfriend at the time, asked me what were some things I loved doing. I mentioned how much I enjoyed photography. So on Valentines day 2014, he surprised me with my first DSLR camera and helped me find a mentor. In 2016, I was running my own photography business, but something was missing. I loved photography but I wasn’t passionate about family or wedding photography.
Last year I started to follow @gypsea_lust on Instagram. Wanderlust took control of me as I looked through her photos – that’s where it all changed. Once I saw how powerful and influential a photo could be, I thought I should start taking travel photos. Last Christmas we went to Puerto Rico, During this trip I started @thelovelyescapist and began documenting my adventures on Instagram.
3) Do you have a favorite trip? And if so, what made it so special?
It’s hard to pick just one! A favorite of mine is when I traveled to Switzerland, Italy, and Hungary with my family in 2007. Even though I had been to Europe before, it was this trip where I began to appreciate traveling. Perhaps I was finally old enough to admire the beauty and history of each county? All I know is traveling became part of me and when I wasn’t seeing the world, I felt lost. Traveling is an addiction –the more you travel, the more you want to travel.
4) You capture the world so beautifully. Do you have any tips on taking and editing photos?
The best thing you can do is start shooting in manual mode! Manual mode gives you control over everything that affects how much light comes into your camera. I’ll try not to get too technical. Let’s say you’re outside on a sunny day and you snap a shot of the sky, the image will probably be blown out. If you learn manual mode, you can make adjustments so the image is darker and the details/color of the sky are more accurate. Another important tip is to edit using Adobe Lightroom on your desktop. I know many use editing apps on their phone, however, you won’t get the same results.
5) Where do you plan on going to next? Any trip in the making?
Next summer my husband and I are going on a Mediterranean cruise and traveling through Spain afterwards! He has never been to Europe so we’re both excited! Our plan is to go on the cruise to get a taste of southern Europe and then return one day to our favorite locations. Till then, I don’t have any other plans but travel opportunities pop up randomly so I’ll be ready to go whenever they do.
6) What have you learned along the way, as you’ve explored different places?
Learn to take snap shots with your mind. I feel I miss out on experiencing a place since my eyes are glued to the camera, so it’s important to set aside time to take in each location fully. It’s easy to lose sight of why you travel. Remember to capture what you see, not see what you capture later on.
7) Do you collect any souvenirs from the places you visit?
I wish I did! Typically, I don’t have any extra room in my luggage! However, if I go anywhere with a beach, I always collect seashells.
8) What makes your heart beat? What do you really believe in, stand for, and want to tell others about?
Travelling fills my heart with so much joy. I have never been happier in my entire life as I have this past year. To me, material objects aren’t as important as memories and experiencing the world. That’s something no one can take away from you! It’s also something that someone with $0 to their name and the richest man in the world have the same ability to do! My hope is that through my photos and blog, I’ll inspire others to see the world and help them discover the joys of travel.
